AMISRAEL Peru empathizes with the Jewish community in Venezuela

On Monday, February 9th, 2009, the Jewish community in Peru, along with the international director of AMISRAEL, Dr. William Soto and other members of the organization in Peru and Bolivia, took part in a pacific demonstration, in front of the Embassy of Venezuela in Lima. The aim of the demonstration was to express their vehement repudiation to the vandalism and profanation of the Synagogue Tiferet Israel in Caracas, which happened on January 30th.

The president of the Jewish association of Peru and Co-president of the Bnai Brith, Dr, Daniel Schydlowsky, handed a protest letter to the Ambassador of Venezuela en Peru, Mr. Armando Laguna, in which he expresses the concern of the Jewish people in Peru concerning such destructive action in the most important Synagogue in Caracas and also lending his support to the Jewish community in Venezuela. In addition, he stated that the people expected the Ambassador’s declaration to be followed thoroughly. Armando Laguna had declared that the Venezuelans government would be inflexible in assuring the religious freedom and respect to the Jews in their country and that he would punish the ones responsible for the anti-Semitist acts. During the Ceremony, Dr. William Soto lent his support to the Jewish community, and in face of the last events in Caracas, asked the Venezuelan authorities to follow the principles stated in the declaration signed by the presidents of Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina. This declaration, signed on December 16th, 2008, condemn any kind of racism, discrimination and religious intolerance. He also asked that the Authorities act in a way that the whole world knows that in Venezuela the Human Rights are indeed respected and that the Venezuelans wish t olive in peace, respecting the differences in a democratic environment.

Dr. Nelly Fuentes, AMISRAEL representative in Peru, reinstated the claim to all other governments around the world, so that the democratic and religious tolerance and the respect to human rights be promoted everywhere. The event was closed by the Major Rabbi of the Jewish community in Peru, Abraham Benhamu, who also asked the Venezuelan Government to take responsibility and bring back an environment of peace and democracy to its country, with respect to the Jewish community, violently outraged by the recent happenings. He ended his speech by praying to God Almighty to enlighten the world leaders in order to bring back peace, fraternity and agreement.
